Health and Safety Representative

Our Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training pathway is designed to equip workplace representatives with the essential knowledge and skills to advocate for and ensure safer working environments. Starting with Stage 1, learners gain foundational insights into HSR roles and legislative requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Stages 2 and 3 delve deeper into risk assessment, incident investigation, and workplace health factors, bridging knowledge gaps and enhancing practical application. Stage 4 serves as a comprehensive refresher, updating representatives on current legislation and critical safety trends. Together, these stages foster confident, effective health and safety leadership.

Available Training Programmes

Health and Safety Representative Training – Stage 1 – HS Rep Pathway

Intention

This training course is designed for representatives to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the overall role and functions of health and safety representatives (HSR’s) in the workplace. The content has been specifically structured to cover the core elements in the role of the HSR in line with new legislative requirements.

Learning outcomes

Overview and duties under the HSAW Act 2015

  • Legal requirements and responsibilities as defined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
  • Risk management processes
  • Obligations of a PCBU

Worker engagement, participation, and representation

  • Understanding of the powers for a representative and workers under the Act
  • The role of advocacy to workers in relation to health and safety

Role and functions of WorkSafe NZ and H&S rep

  • Risk management
  • Issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices
  • Cease work requirements

Delivery

This facilitated 1-day (6-hour) course involves interactive sessions where real-life industry incidents and examples are used. On successful completion of this course, learners will be credited with unit standard 29315 (Level 3, Credits 2): The role & functions of the Health & Safety Representative. This course provides a pathway to a full NZ Certificate in Workplace Health & Safety Practice – Level 3.

Course costs

$2250 + GST per day + disbursements + NZQA fees. Includes a certificate of attendance.

Workplace Health and Safety Practice: Continuing Education – HSR Stage 2

Intention

This training short course has been designed for Health & Safety representatives, coordinators, managers, and other H&S professionals to be used as a continuing education or upskilling event, or to bring your previous knowledge up to date with regard to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the important changes within the legislation.

The content has been specifically structured to cover the new legislative requirements and give a deeper understanding of the assessment of risk, and to provide an opportunity for participants to practically apply the skills of risk assessment through the Job Safety/Work Method Statement processes.

Learning outcomes

NZ Health & Safety Legislation: HSAW Act 2015

  • Key duties and their application
  • Legal requirements and responsibilities as defined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
  • Worker participation and engagement

Unit Standard: 30264 (Level 3, Credits 3)

Health & Safety Risk Assessment

  • Understanding the full risk assessment process
  • Understanding the job safety analysis method of risk assessment

Unit Standards: 30265 (Level 3, Credits 8), 19522 (Level 3, Credits 3)

Health & Safety Culture and Practices

  • Communication, reporting, and documentation of healthy and safe practices
  • Positive workplace health and safety culture

Unit Standard: 30266 (Level 3, Credits 6)

Delivery

This facilitated 2-day (12-hour total) course involves interactive sessions where real-life industry incidents and examples are used.

On successful completion of this course, learners will be credited with four unit standards, which in some cases will allow holders of previous National Certificates to obtain the new NZ Certificate in Workplace Health & Safety Practice – Level 3.

Course costs

$2250 + GST per day + disbursements + NZQA fees.
Includes a certificate of attendance.

Note: If run as an LCP, no NZQA costs are incurred.

Workplace Health and Safety Practice: Continuing Education – HSR Stage 3

Intention

This training short course has been designed for Health & Safety representatives, coordinators, managers, and other H&S professionals to be used as a continuing education or upskilling event or to bring your previous knowledge up to date.

The content has been specifically structured to uncover the key health & safety risk factors affecting the workplace today and to give a deeper understanding of the process for investigating incidents. The course will provide an opportunity for participants to practically apply the skills of incident investigation in order to produce an incident report from an investigation carried out in the workplace.

Learning outcomes

Health & Safety Incident Investigation

  • Understanding the health and safety incident investigation process, including legislative requirements for investigation and reporting
  • The concepts of multiple causation and root cause analysis
  • Detail an incident process (practice)
  • Produce an incident investigation report

Unit Standard: 17601 (Level 4, Credits 6)

Health & Safety Risk Factors

  • Understanding the management of drug and alcohol-related problems in the workplace
  • Understanding the prevention and management of discomfort, pain, and injury (DPI) in the workplace

Unit Standards: 22316 (Level 3, Credits 4), 17591 (Level 3, Credits 8)

Workplace Fatigue

  • Sleep and sleep management in relation to work performance

Unit Standard: 21337 (Level 3, Credits 2)

Delivery

This facilitated 2-day (12-hour total) course involves interactive sessions where real-life industry incidents and examples are used.

On successful completion of this course, learners will be credited with four unit standards. Learners who have also previously completed Stage 2 can now be awarded the NZ Certificate in Workplace Health & Safety Practice – Level 3.

Intention

This training short course has been designed for Health & Safety representatives, coordinators, managers, and other H&S professionals to be used as a continuing education event or as an annual refresher for holders of National Certificate or NZ Certificate in Occupational/Workplace Health and Safety qualifications.

The content will be specifically structured to bring your knowledge up to date with regard to any important changes within the legislation, i.e., Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, etc.

The course will also cover the key health & safety risk factors affecting the workplace today.
